Hachimantai - Onuma Nature Research Path (Kazuno City, Tazawako Town)

Hachimantai boasts some of the best virgin beech forests in all of Japan. Unchanged from antiquity, these woods are a treasure trove of nature, with alpine flora blooming in marshes and around volcanic lakes.

Mt. Moriyoshizan - Oku-Moriyoshi, Oku-Ani (Kitaakita City)

Explore some of the largest tracts of completely untouched beech forests in all of Japan. If your luck prevails, you might even spot the rare and elusive black woodpecker.

Shirakami Sanchi (Fujisato Town, Futatsui Town)

One of the world's largest birch forests, the UNSECO World Heritage property known as the Shirakami Sanchi is a treasure trove of flora and fauna straddling the Aomori-Akita border. Among the most prominent of the area's rare animals are the black woodpecker and Japanese golden eagle, but there are innumerable mammals, insects, and more for you to discover.

Dakigaeri Gorge (Tazawako Town, Kakunodate Town)

Steep cliffs, waterfalls of various sizes, and cherry and maple trees are among the natural attractions in these virginal woods.

Mt. Taiheizan (Akita City)

Thickly wooded Taiheizan has long been an object of worship for local peoples, and is even now the site of numerous shrines. Additionally, Buddhist statues carved in stone dot the mountain's trails, welcoming hikers to this sacred space.

Mt. Akita-Komagatake (Tazawako Town)

Constituted by the three peaks of Odake, Medake, and Omedake, Akita-Komagatake has been named a National Natural Monument. Located at the southern tip of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park, the tallest mountain in the prefecture is popular for its great views and wealth of alpine flora.
