Gandoko Family Travel Village Hiking Course (Tamayama Village)

Over the total 8-km length of this course are various attractions, including a fabulous view of Lake Gandoko from Mt. Ainoyama and a hydrophyte garden highlighted by the white flowers of skunk cabbage. Enjoy nature and walking the plank, so to speak, on the well-maintained wooden path.

Hayasaka Kogen Path (Iwaizumi Town)

The brilliant contrast of azaleas and white birches in this highland area around Hayasaka Pass is accented by giant Japanese lindens and larches. This entire area is also well known and well loved as home to delicious, wild mountain vegetables.

Kurikoma Quasi-National Park (Nature Research Path) (Ichinoseki City)

The upper reaches of the highlands surrounding Mt. Kurikomayama are marked by a volcanic landscape and ponds. Hikers and nature lovers climb trails leading from Iwate, Akita, and Miyagi Prefectures to enjoy the dramatic views and colonies of gentians.

Mt. Iwate (Nishine Town, Takizawa Vil, Shizukuishi Town, Matsuo Vill.)

Mt. Iwate, known for its resemblance to Mt. Fuji, offers a fabulous view from its 2,038-meter peak. Bleeding hearts, Japanese mountain avens, and Viola brevistipulata are among the alpine flora enjoyed by mountain climbers.

Hachimantai (Matsuo Vil.)

The Aspite Line provides 27 km of exquisite driving scenery including gnarled firs and emerald lakes. A brief hike to the peak reveals a breathtaking panorama, while a walk through the woods puts you in touch with the drama of nature.

Mt. Nanashigureyama (Ashiro Town)

The gentle, grassy lower slopes of this 1063-m mountain are perfect for mountain climbing, hiking, and simply enjoying the great outdoors. The new green of spring and the colorful foliage of fall are the best backdrop for this mountain's easy hiking trail, which can be completed in about 1 hr 30 mins.

Mt. Himekami (Tamayama Vil.)

The Ipponsugi trail up this 1063.8-m mountain's perfect cone winds through alpine flora and white birches, and takes about 1 hr 30 mins. There are also three other courses available. Hiking and picnicking are enjoyable around the lower and middle regions of this mountain. For the adventurous, try the 13-km wooded walking trail north to Lake Gandoko.
