Even in Japan, renowned for its beautiful seasons, the wide fluctuations in temper-ature and fresh, vivid colors of northern Tohoku stand out.
In winter, snowflakes float through the crisp, clean air and down onto the heads of passers-by. In spring, the plants awake from their winter slumber, erupting in a mass of color. Summer sees all nature basking in the sunlight. Then the ears on the rice plants turn golden yellow, and the green mountain leaves turn yellow and red, heralding the arrival of autumn.
In the midst of the beauty of the four seasons, life goes on for the people of northern Tohoku. The subtleties of the seasons and time old traditions long since lost from Japan's big cities, still flourish here―in the rice paddies beside the houses, in the mountain villages, in the deep forests, and in the coastal towns and villages. The many seasonal customs are reflected in the down-to-earth, honest ways of the local people.
Northern Tohoku is, in a sense, the true Japan. A visit to this land where family values remain strong and daily life is steeped in tradition is sure to be a heartwarming experience.
